European Citizens Climate Cup (ECCC)

Would you like to:

  • Lose less of your hard earned cash on heating your homes?
  • Win the European Energy Savers Cup?
  • Win Euro 2,000 in prizes?

If the answer is yes to even one of the above, read on and keep your eyes peeled because we start soon!

European targets of 20% CO2 reduction by 2020 need to be reached by the EU as a whole and the IEE project “European Citizens Climate Cup” or ECCC aims to do its bit in reaching these targets. ECCC is a competition for householders in Ireland, and other european countries, and aims to  prove that a large number of citizens can achieve European targets in everyday life with little effort.

In the competition the Irish householders who save the most energy will receive prizes (*Euro 2,000) and the one who saves the most energy will compete against householders from other european nations for a European Cup. This gives Irish householders the chance to be the greatest energy savers in Europe and attend a gala awards ceremony in Brussels in which the overall winner receives an artisan designed trophy for the first time ever. The other competing countries are: United Kingdom, Denmark, Latvia, Bulgaria, Spain, Italy, Malta, Greece and Germany.

* Like Ireland each nation has its own national competition from which the winners enter the European Cup!  As mentioned above the Irish Energy Savers of the Year, the households with the highest CO2 reduction and the most convincing energy saving measures, will be awarded prizes. We are currently negotiaiting these prizes but they will be worth around Euro 2,000 and will take the form of energy make overs for the home so that in the future the winners of this competition will be losing less of their hard earned money on heating their homes!

Energy Savings Account

The participating householders will use a web based energy management tool called the Energy Savings Account (ESA). The householders input their meter readings etc. into the ESA and it collects all energy consumption and cost data and evaluates it. The ESA visualises and displays this information and shows trends of past and future consumption, costs and emissions. ESA will be the monitoring tool of the competition as it benchmarks energy savings and calculates CO2 reduction of the different national teams. The ESA was developed by SEnerCon and is currently used by 20,000 members of the German “Energiesparclub”.

As mentioned householders enter their consumption and cost data from meter readings and energy bills into the ESA. They are also encouraged to identify energy saving measures already implemented. We will have 10.000 competing ESA householders across Europe.  Account holders register with their email addresses so they can receive individualised emails with consumer tips to save energy. User surveys will help to improve the usability and to evaluate effects of different energy saving measures. Thus, ESA helps to involve a large number of householders in a conservation  dialogue, which we can all join and, which will show Europe to be a leading light in energy conservation reaching its 2020 targets like no other continent.

To reach the target group of householders the ECCC campaign will cooperate with other organisations and companies who want to see emissions reduced e.g. utilities, municipalities, tenant and owner associations, property managers, housing companies, real estate portals, manufacturers of household appliances and wholesalers.
