Your Home

Our homes are using large amounts of energy on a daily basis such that approximately 25% of Irelands energy need is down to our homes. By reducing the amount of energy that we are using at home we make it more energy efficient which makes it more comfortable to live in and reduces our bills and our CO2 emissions. This can be done in a number of ways:

Step 1:   Changing our habits

Changing our behaviour can cost us nothing, in fact by making a few changes we are saving large amounts of energy and money.  Simple changes like reducing standby useage, increasing our useage of the clothes line and filling the dishwasher and washing machine can save a fortune. Step 2:   Choosing energy efficient products

When replacing appliances in your home buy energy efficient replacements. For example installing just four energy efficient light bulbs in the busiest light sockets in your home can reduce your electricity use for lighting by 80%. For more information

Step 3:   Upgrading  insulation  and heating systems of the house and taking advantage of the grants available

Typically Irish homes are not well insulated and heating systems can be extremely inefficient. However an initiative from SEAI enables homeowners to avail of grants which reduce the cost of insulating and heating their homes. For more information

Step 4:   Introducing Renewables into your home

A number of renewable options are possible for Irish homes including solar panels, heat pumps and hydroelectric. SEAI currently provide grants for some of these. For more information
