Sustainable Transport in North and South Tipperary County Councils

December 1st, 2008 | Posted by Siona Daly

Introduction

From December 2008 – May 2009, a Sustainable Transport project was completed in County Hall in Clonmel and the Civic Offices in Nenagh. The project kicked off wit an Awareness Campaign that lasted for 1 week in each Council Building. Various presentations were left rolling on the screens of the canteens. This was basically to spark interest in the next stage of the project – Work Travel Plans.

Work Travel Plans

An online survey was sent to all employees in these 2 buildings asking them about their travel habits from home – work  and their level of awareness on the topic of climate change and sustainable transport. Over 200 people responded to the survey.

Results

On average 93% of people that worked in each of these buildings drove to work in a private car. The reasons why the car is the salient choice for these people is outlined below in the pie-chart.

Outcome

As a result of the project, an eco-drive workshop was set up in North Tipperary County Council. In South Tipperary, a submission was made to the Department of Transport for funding to develop safe cycling and walking routes through town and to the suburbs of Clonmel. Unfortunately, this submission was unsuccessful.
