European Climate Citizens Cup (ECCC)
Aim of the project
The ECCC or European Citizens Climate Cup is a competition between european householders which will prove that citizens can reduce their energy consumption and meet European targets with little effort. This competiton starts real soon!
European Citizens Climate Cup
Climate change is not just a national challenge as European targets are now set at a 20% CO2 reduction by 2020. There are ten european countries in the ECCC competition. In each country participating householders will compete and try to make the highest energy savings and CO2 reductions. The best Irish teams will receive prizes of euro 2,000 and the top team will have its travel paid to a glamorous european award ceremony in Brussels. At this ceremony the household with the best savings in Europe will be awarded a european trophy for the first time ever. The ECCC is targeting an annual reduction of at least 2 % electricity consumption and 4% energy consumption for space heating.
Energy Savings Account
The ECCC campaign provided householders with a web based energy management tool, the Energy Savings Account (ESA). After the householder inputs their meter readings etc into the ESA, all energy consumption and cost data are collected and evaluated. All information is visualised, displaying trends of past and future consumption, costs and emissions. ESA will also be the monitoring tool of the competition as it benchmarks energy savings and calculates CO2 reduction of the different national teams. The ESA was developed by SEnerCon and is currently used by 20,000 members of the German “Energiesparclub”.
Householders are also encouraged to indicate energy saving measures already performed. 10.000 ESA users in all participating countries is the target. Account holders register with their email addresses so they can receive individualised emails with consumer tips to save energy. User surveys will help to improve the usability and to evaluate effects of different energy saving measures. Thus, ESA helps to involve a large number of householders in a dialogue that motivates conservation of energy right across Europe.
To reach the target group of householders the ECCC campaign will cooperate with different organisations and companies as multipliers to promote the Climate Cup amongst their members or clients, e.g. utilities, municipalities, tenant and owner associations, property managers, housing companies, real estate portals, manufacturers of household appliances and wholesalers.
