EU Commission – ALTENER Project – Domestic Wood Pellet Heating System

March 1st, 2001 | Posted by Francoise Hickey

The aim of the project was to assess the potential for developing a market for wood pellets in relation to the domestic market. There has been some interest in the development of wood pellets in Ireland since 1999 with an informal network of interested parties meeting to discuss the potential. The work completed under this project was the result of a proposal submitted to the EU Altener programme to assess the potential for developing a market for wood pellets in relation to domestic market. The focus of the project was on seeking to develop a demonstration of domestic wood pellets heating systems in Ireland and based initially on imported wood pellets. It was beyond the scope of the project to drive the development of wood pellet production itself in Ireland. However a portion of the project dealt with producing a development plant for the industry based on knowledge gained from International Partners.
