Energy Audit of Thurles Leisure Centre

Energy Audit:

The Thurles Leisure Centre was audited in July 2009. This leisure facility is a new building and has a lot of energy efficiency measures designed into the building. An example of this is the natural light that floods the swimming pool hall. This reduces the requirement to turn on the metal halide lights in this hall. These lights are very energy intensive. Other energy efficiency measures that were “designed in” include variable speed drive and controls of air handling, advanced BMS facility and a pool cover for both the large pool and the jacuzzi area.

Implementation

The actions that were recommended included reduced temperature settings for the pool and the spa, reduced MIC settings, reduced temperature settings for the AHU, reduced temperature settings in the gym and consequently reduced use of the AHU in the gym, low energy lighting retrofit, timers / lux sensors for external lights, vending machines on timer etc.

Results

Because the Thurles Leisure Centre is outsourced by North Tippery County Council, the same degree of feedback has not been implemented as is in other publicly owned facilities. Therefore, there is no evidence of energy savings to date.
